Scaling Broiler farming in Kenya: Martin Mwenda’s story

15 Feb 2024

Feeding challenges once held my pig farm back, with poor growth and losses. Discovering De Heus turned things around, helping my pigs thrive and my farm succeed.

Martin Mwenda, a dedicated farmer from Meru, specializes in broiler meat production. He started his farm in 2017 and currently has 1,600 broiler chicks, with a capacity of up to 5,000.

In the early days, Martin faced challenges with feed quality and consistency. Searching for solutions, he discovered online that farmers in Uganda were achieving excellent results using De Heus. Since the opening of a De Heus distribution outlet in Kenya, Martin has been able to access a reliable supply of this high-quality feed. With De Heus, Martin now achieves a live weight of 1.5 kg between 32 and 35 days, producing broilers ready for market.

De Heus also provides extensive support through on-farm training and seminars, teaching farmers about temperature management, proper feeding, and accurate record-keeping, all critical for profitability in poultry farming.

While Martin is very satisfied with De Heus products, he still faces challenges with other raw materials, particularly in terms of quality and consistent supply. He is therefore excited about the upcoming De Heus factory in Kenya, which will provide complete broiler feeds locally.

Looking ahead, Martin plans to expand his farm to 15,000–20,000 broilers and aims to capture the entire broiler meat supply chain across Kenya.

Martin leaves a message for fellow farmers: “Farmers should focus on broiler production. With the population growing and the demand for white meat increasing, the market will never disappoint.”
